Dwayne Douglas Johnson was born on May 2, 1972, in Hayward, California, the son of Ata Johnson (née Maivia; 1936–2008) and former professional wrestler Wayde Douglas Bowles (1944–2008). His maternal grandmother, Lia Maivia, was one of wrestling’s few female promoters, taking over Polynesian Pacific Pro Wrestling after her husband Peter’s death in 1982. His paternal grandfather, “High Chief” Peter Maivia, was also a wrestler.
Although Johnson’s wrestling ability was initially hindered by his large size, he eventually learned the basics from his uncles and went on to become one of the most successful wrestlers in the world. In 1996, Johnson signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), and was promoted as the first third-generation wrestler in the company’s history. He made his WWF debut at Survivor Series that year under his real name, winning a six-man tag team elimination match.
The following year, he was given the ring name “The Rock”, and was rapidly pushed as a member of the Nation of Dom “What a legit and warm surprise at the top of the show!
